History of Eagle
When gold was found in the Boise Basin in 1862, people began to flock there to try their luck. Meanwhile, a brave man named Truman C. Catlin believed that the prospectors and inhabitants required food. C. Catlin prepared 160 acres of land along the Boise River for irrigation in 1863 to counteract the issue. Eagle Island was called from the abundance of bald eagles in the area. Catlin and his neighbor began building irrigation canals in the region to water the entire farm. The effort paid off since it watered most of the valley's soil, and most of these ditches can still be seen today.
Thomas Aikens purchased the land on the north and south sides of the Boise River in 1877. He also acquired ownership of the Valley Road between Eagle and Boise. The Valley Road (today's state highway 44) served as the primary connecting road between Boise and the communities to the west. Aikens wanted to build a bridge across the Boise River to connect his lands on the north and south sides, but the town of Star was the biggest impediment to his plans. The County Commission conducted a vote to allow the public to decide. Aikens won the election for his wizard planning. Following the completion of the bridge, a new school, a grocery shop, and Old Fellow Hall were built. Aikens sold fifteen acres for the town's development in 1904. Soon after, the town was officially given the name Eagle.
With a fast-paced progression, the town became a popular suburban community. In 1971, the Ada County Commission declared Eagle as a new city. After a decade in 1982, Eagle Island Prison Farm was transformed into Eagle Island State Park which is now a popular recreational hub.
