After two decades, the government emptied the area and put it up for sale. Years later, in 1890, Thomas J. Davis, a cattle rancher, placed the property on rent for Chinese immigrants after purchasing 600 acres of it. The Chinese converted land into a lush green garden of strawberries, onions, and other vegetables in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The gardens provided the inspiration for the city's name.
Over time, the Chinese began to leave the region, and Boise's business owners decided to open gambling houses to earn a fortune. For many years, the business thrived, and the income aided in the development of parks and other facilities in the region. Gambling was outlawed in the region through legislation during the next few years.
As a result, the Garden City sparked business and raised awareness of the region as a cheap and handy location for stores and housing construction. Garden City was prospering in both the commercial and housing sectors in the 1970s.
